A dwarf form of the Christmas Tree, although this one grows into a small mound. Resin and foliage have a typical balsam scent.  Selected in 1866.  Very slow growing, just 2-4 inches per year.  Can be planted in sun or shade and in well-drained soil.  Salt tolerant which makes it a good plant for street or sidewalk plantings.  Ideal for rock gardening, container gardening, bonsai culture, and Japanese gardens.  Propagated by rooted cuttings. It likes cooler climates of the US, zones 3-7.

Acer buergerianum ‘Mino yatsubusa’

 Mino Yatsubusa is a dwarf form of the beautiful Trident Maple.  This small shrub-like cultivar, with dense branching and tightly spaced nodes may only grow cm. per year. The leaves have a sharp pointed center lobe with smaller side lobes extending at nearly right angles, giving the leaves an unusual T-shaped appearance. The summer foliage is a rich, shiny green which turns to scarlet and orange. This rare selection is excellent for specimen plantings and bonsai training. Content in partial shade to full sun. Reaches 6-8’ in 15-20 years. Grafted on Acer buergerianum seedlings. Zone 5-9.

 Coonara Pygmy was selected by Arnold Teese of Yamina Rare Plants in Victoria, Australia.  This selection has a small, rounded habit with very close node spacing, and a dense arrangement of branches and foliage. It will mature around 6-8’ with a comparable spread. The medium to dark green leaves turn pastel orange, yellow, and various shades of pink in Autumn. Excellent choice for container gardening, and bonsai training. Does well in moderate shade to full sun. Grafted on Acer palmatum seedlings.  Zone 5-9.

 This new Japanese maple from the late Ilo Sorenson of Sydney, Australia is likely to  become commonplace in gardens around the world. It was discovered as a branch sport on Acer palmatum ‘Sango kaku’. It is essentially a smaller, more compact form of the popular ‘Sango kaku’ and ‘Beni kawa’ coral bark maples. It has bright red stems and small green leaves. It is vigorous when young, but slows to form a small 8-10’ tree or shrub.  Fall color display is exceptional with orange, red, and yellow. Full sun or partial shade.  Grafted on Acer palmatum seedlings.  Zone (5) 6-9.

 The ‘flower-viewing tapestry’ maple is one of the smallest leaf forms in the dwarf group of Japanese maples.  The leaves, emerging with an orange tint and turning light green, are only ½ to 1” long and wide. They are closely spaced along the tiny branches. This selection will reach only 6-8’ tall with a 5-6’ spread. Good choice for container gardening or bonsai use, as well as in the garden. Grafted on Acer palmatum seedlings. Zone 6-9.

 A true dwarf form of Japanese Maple, grows less than 4 feet tall in about 10 years with dense branching and a bushy, rounded habit.  'Kiyohime' shows a unique blend of color and form.  Shiny green leaves are tinged with red-orange in the spring progressing through the season to yellow-orange in fall.  Good choice for container gardening or bonsai use particularly because the branches are strong and do not tend to sport long shoots.  Grafted on Acer palmatum seedlings.  ‘Koto ito komachi’, in Japanese, translates as “old harp string” or “beautiful little girl”.  This selection, named by Hideo Suzuki, was originally discovered by J.D. Vertrees, as a chance seedling in Roseburg, Oregon.  This very unique cultivar has almost thread-like leaves which emerge with reddish tints. The leaf is comprised of 3-5 long, green, extremely narrow lobes.  This variety displays an extremely dwarf habit in the landscape; typically growing only about 1"-3” per year. Very unusual form. Grafted on Acer palmatum seedlings. Zone 5-9.

  This superb selection has a very compact, multi-branching habit with short stubby branches and extremely tight internodes.  This outstanding cultivar was found as a chance seedling and introduced by Jimmy Sharp of Sharp’s Nursery in Sandy, Oregon .  Considered by some to be the best of the dwarf maples, this plant has a compact, dense habit, reaching only about 3 feet tall by 3 feet wide at maturity.  The small palmate leaf emerges a lustrous green changing to a fiery orange display in fall.  Very similar to the species, except on a miniature scale. Very suitable for specimen plantings, container gardening, Japanese gardens, and bonsai culture. Grafted on Acer palmatum seedlings.  Zone 6-9.

A narrowly upright, fastigiate Sugar Maple with regular size leaves!  Looks like a child trying on adult clothing.  This tree was discovered by Mr. Robert Cole as a chance seedling growing in Pickaway County, Ohio. Although the parentage of this new variety is unknown, it is believed to be a chance seedling of Acer saccharum.  The leaves in fall will turn yellow-orange to red  It has a dwarf to semi-dwarf growth rate (grows at 1/2 the rate of a typical sugar maple) but will eventually reach a height of 25 feet with a spread of 10 feet.  The plant patent documents state the trees were 17 feet tall at 13 years old.  Hardy to zone 4.

Also introduced by Theodore Klein from a witches broom growth.  'Shawnee' is very compact and similar to 'Powhaten', but has an oval-shaped canopy and does not grow as upright.  The colors in fall are typical of the species, brilliant oranges, red, and yellows!  Grows to 20 feet.  Grafted on Acer saccharum seedlings.  Zone 6-9.

 Native to China, this small shrub forms an upright spreading habit and reaches a mature height of around 6-8’.  The small lustrous, dark green leaf has reddish margins.  Small ½ inch white, mildly fragrant flowers, appear in June-July and persist into October, giving the plant the appearance of being covered in small white buttons.  Very pleasing.  This plant is very adaptable to most planting sites, except those with consistently wet soils.   Good choice for summer flowering in shady locations. Propagated from rooted stem cuttings. Zone 5-9.

Betula nigra ‘Little King’

 This dwarf selection of the popular River Birch was discovered and introduced by Jim King of Oswego, Illinois.  It forms a dense, compact, rounded-oval habit with thick branching eventually reaching a mature height of around 10 feet with a slightly smaller spread.   The leaves are similar in shape and size to the species, but with the darker green and glossy  foliage.  Fall color is a bright yellow.  This form also displays the characteristic exfoliating bark peeling away to reveal cinnamon-brown and salmon tones, which makes it a great choice for added winter interest in any landscape.  Provide moist, slightly acidic soil in sun or very light shade.  Excellent choice for specimen plantings, wet sites, and winter interest landscape plantings where space is limited. Rooted stem cuttings. Zone 4-10.
